Making Inquiry

“So Saul died for his trespass which he committed against the Lord, because of the word of the Lord which he did not keep; and also because he asked counsel of a medium, making inquiry of it, and did not inquire of the Lord. Therefore He killed him and turned the kingdom to David the son of Jesse.” (1 Chronicles 10:13-14, NASB95)King Saul of Israel was the political leader of God’s chosen people. It was a position of great responsibility.  Unfortunately, he did not hold this responsibility well.One of the grave errors made by Saul was consulting the counsel of a medium.  Though he had banned “spiritists” from the land, Saul himself consulted “the witch at Endor” in hopes of discovering the future.  This lack of regard for God’s word and lack of integrity with his own word cost Saul and his sons their lives.Perhaps you have not consulted one of the modern spiritists, channelers, or fortune tellers who are so accessible in the modern world (as in the ancient).   While you may not have taken counsel with these, where have you turned for counsel?Would this scripture apply to you if you left out one word and filled in the blank, as follows:  “[you] asked counsel of _________, making inquiry of it, and did not inquire of the Lord”?  Are we guilty of finding our counsel in friends, family, experts, books, and more, and not inquiring of the Lord?  Do we find ourselves imitating the successful people and organizations of the world more than imitating Jesus Christ?Are we as guilty as Saul? In His Grace,Dr. Randy White
