Mighty God and Mighty Men

“David became greater and greater, for the Lord of hosts was with him.” (1 Chronicles 11:9, NASB95)“For day by day men came to David to help him, until there was a great army like the army of God.” (1 Chronicles 12:22, NASB95)King David was the greatest King of Israel.  His walk with God is honored to this day, and his leadership emulated in many ways.  As I see it, there were two “secrets” to his success.First, David became “greater and greater” because “the Lord of hosts was with him.”  This is indispensable, and one of the many reasons we should devote ourselves to “seek first the Kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33).  In David’s personal walk with God, he developed a depth of relationship that is rare among men.  God honored this commitment by placing his hand on David’s life.    This is not to say that all who live a deep spiritual life will be blessed with greatness among men, but spiritual greatness can only come with a depth of relationship with God.Second, David became “greater and greater” because “day by day men came to David to help him”.  These men became known as David’s Mighty Men.  Listed by name in 1 Chronicles 11-12, these men fought the battles of the Kingdom on David’s behalf.   Brave and valiant, the kingdom was built by such men.  Every great spiritual leader is blessed by “Mighty Men” who draw the sword, fight the lions, and build the city. All of us can work on developing a stronger, deeper, wider spiritual life.  All of us can also both be “Mighty Men” for another and rejoice in the “Mighty Men” God has placed in our lives. In His Grace,Dr. Randy White
