Will We Be Left Behind?
There is an anti-pretribulation rapture movement in the church today. Many church leaders, with a strong disdain for dispensational theology, are attacking the doctrine of a pre-trib rapture with a new fervor. The anti-rapture movement is growing, and is filled with misinformation. With the latest “Left Behind” movie, questions about and attacks on the rapture are very common. As one who is committed to the pre-tribulation rapture, I am using this episode of Ask the Theologian to address some of the concerns and misinformation from those who are in the anti-rapture movement. The three areas of misinformation I will address in this episode are:
- “The Bible warns believers about persecutions and tribulations, so surely God does not remove Christians from the Great Tribulation.” Challenge: The final tribulation is the wrath of God. Christians are never instructed to prepare for God’s wrath, but that they will be removed from God’s wrath.
- “The Pre-tribulation rapture is a new view, invented by J.N. Darby.” Challenge: this criticism is one of the most weak logical arguments of all. Do not base your doctrine on the arguments of man, but on the Bible.
- “Jesus clearly taught that the elect would endure the tribulation, and then the end will come.” Challenge: This argument is a misuse or misunderstanding of Scripture and of dispensationalism. The Pre-trib rapture doctrine cannot be built from Matthew 24.
